12 Months of Smiles

18 October 2020
Karyn Jones

It's been a very odd 12 months. A year ago, I decided to focus my energies on returning to my passion – painting. 10 years of hard work had passed, a relocation to a different country, a different culture, a different language and a different climate, coupled with the exhausting project of renovating a beautiful house and establishing a new home. All now complete and my soul was yearning to get back to my raison d'etre.

Painting has been the easy part – it's what comes naturally, but to succeed, I was going to have to break new ground, create a new vehicle and fine tune it to carry me safely down the path of my goals.

A business, a proper business, designed to work for me and push the boundaries a little. Assembling all the components, carefully, and in the correct order became the new project. The legal side, the technical side, the marketing, the social media, the Internet channels, the planning, the objectives – not something us artists are renowned for, but this is the Twenties now – simply slapping oil on canvas won't do anymore.

And it's been a great, if frustrating 12 months. Not all the goals have been delivered safely to the back of the net, thanks to a bowl of bat soup somewhere, and yes, those challenges remain for the next year, but onwards we go, because ultimately, that's why I'm doing this. Painting isn't enough. Painting and achieving, painting and creating, painting and succeeding and painting and smiling is the destination, and thanks to you all for following something of the journey so far.

Next week, a new exhibition begins, locally, whilst other work of mine is currently exhibited in the US, my 2020 creations now hang on walls all over Europe, Australia, and the US. And through it all, I'm smiling – I couldn't be happier and I hope it shows.

Thanks to you all
